The Principle of Mentalism: Unlocking the Power of Your Mind | 7 Hermetic Principles Series Part 2

Updated: Mar 22

Welcome back to my 7 Hermetic Principles series! Last week, I introduced all seven principles and gave an overview of how they work together. If you missed it, check out Part 1 here for a full overview of all 7 principles.

Today, we’re diving into the first Hermetic Principle: The Principle of Mentalism. Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of the Kybalion, Hermetic philosophy, or even this principle — I’ll break it down clearly, explain what it means, and show you exactly how to apply it in your life.

What is the Principle of Mentalism?

The Kybalion teaches that

“The All is Mind.”
  • “The All” refers to God or Source Energy — the source of all things.

  • Everything that exists, from the universe itself to your personal life, begins in the mind of the All.

  • Everything we experience is filtered through consciousness. Everything is mental.

This means that the physical world, emotions, relationships, and even events all originate in the mind first. We live in a universe that is fundamentally mental, and because we are a part of that All, each of us carries a spark of that consciousness.

In practical terms, this means we are co-creators of our experience. Every thought, every belief, and every feeling shapes the reality we see.

Understanding Source Energy and Benevolence

One of the most important things to understand is that the All is benevolent.

  • If everything comes from one source, that source wouldn't working against itself.

  • What we perceive as good, evil, highs, or lows is relative, not absolute.

Even when life feels confusing, chaotic, or painful, the universe at its core is neutral and benevolent. There is no “man in the sky” judging you. This can be liberating — because it means your reality is about alignment, not punishment.

Everything Starts in the Mind: Practical Examples

The Principle of Mentalism isn’t just philosophical — it’s highly practical. Here’s how it works in real life:

  1. Your experiences are mental first.

    • Your career, relationships, health, and daily life all exist as ideas in your mind before they show up physically.

    • For example, when you visualize achieving a goal, that thought is the blueprint. The physical outcome flows naturally from it.

  2. Clearing doubt and resistance matters more than action.

    • When faced with choices — “Should I take this job? Should I be with this person?” — your focus does not need to be on the physical action itself.

    • Your work is to clear mental obstacles: doubts, fears, anxieties. When your mind is aligned with joy, the right path unfolds naturally.

  3. Action is secondary.

    • Many people think action alone creates results, but manifestation actually begins in the mind. Action can support it, but mental alignment is the true driver.

    • For instance, you might spend hours visualizing your dream life. Even minimal physical action — like journaling or clarifying intentions — is enough to start the flow.

Magickal Thinking in Daily Life

I call this magkical thinking: understanding that the world you experience is mental and that you are 100% responsible for your reality. Not in a blaming or judgmental way— more in an empowering way to say that you have the power through your mind to change your circumstances.

Practical ways to start:

  • Observe your thoughts and emotions as creators of your experience.

  • Practice seeing the world as fluid and mental, not fixed and purely physical.

  • Focus on joy and clarity; watch how the right opportunities naturally appear.

Even the physical world is dense energy. It feels “real” and separate because it’s dense, but it is still mental. Recognizing this is the first step to consciously creating your life.

How to Apply the Principle of Mentalism to Real Decisions

Here’s how this principle shows up in real-life decisions:

When we face choices — like deciding between jobs, relationships, or even where to live — it’s easy to get caught up in analyzing every possible outcome. Traditional advice says, “Weigh the pros and cons, take action, and pick the best option.”

Mentalism teaches a very different approach:

  1. Focus on the feeling first — not the physical choice. Ask yourself: “Which path feels joyful?” The physical details don’t matter yet.

  2. Clear doubt and resistance — the most important step is to remove any mental clutter: doubts, fears, anxieties, and “what ifs.” These are the things actually blocking your joy. You don’t need to force a choice in the physical world; your job is to clear the mental obstacles.

  3. Trust alignment over action — once your mind is aligned with the feeling of joy and clarity, the right physical path naturally unfolds. You may take action, but the outcome doesn’t depend on forcing it.

In other words, your job is not to pick the perfect job or the perfect partner. Your job is to clear your mind so joy can flow. When you do that, the universe — which is mental like you — arranges your external life to match your internal alignment. This works across everything: careers, relationships, health, creative projects, and parenting.

Key Takeaways

  • The All is Mind: Everything originates in consciousness.

  • Life is benevolent: Challenges are relative, not punitive.

  • You create reality from the mind first: Physical action is secondary.

  • Clear doubt and resistance: Mental clarity allows joy and opportunity to flow.

  • Practice magical thinking daily: Recognize your mind as the source of your experience.

By practicing mentalism, you can begin to align with joy, clarity, and Source Energy, ultimately designing a life that reflects your inner consciousness.
